Bournemouth & Area
Bournemouth is one of the main holiday resorts on the South Coast of England boasting seven miles of golden sandy beaches.
Until the early 1800s Bournemouth as we know it essentially didn’t exist. It was retired army officer Lewis Tregonwell who first recognised the tourist potential of the area when he built a series of villas on his land between 1816 and 1822. He hoped that a combination of sea-bathing and scented pine trees would attract people to the area to improve their health. The rest is history!
Many people are attracted to Bournemouth’s miles of beaches but there’s also plenty going on in the town itself which has a rich variety of shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs. For night-birds there’s plenty of evening entertainment with theatres, nightclubs and various events throughout the year. The Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) and Pavilion Theatre have a year-round programme of live entertainment which includes touring bands, classical orchestras, musicals, children’s shows, comedy, ballet and ice skating. For culture buffs there’s the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum which houses a mix of fascinating artefacts, paintings and gems collected by the Russell-Cotes family.
Further afield there’s Poole, home to the second largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney. There are five lovely beaches in Poole, including Sandbanks with it’s clutch of Blue Flag awards. It’s a great place to relax on the beach and watch the world go by or indulge in some exciting watersports action.
Just along the coast is Christchurch, a historic town which can trace it’s history back to Norman times. It is located at the confluence of two rivers - the Avon and the Stour. Visit the famous Priory and historical quarter near to the high street and take in the traditional weekly Farmers Market.
